The main reason I started IT@Home was to provide support in an area that requires something more than just a 'guy
to call' when something goes wrong. I believe my skills in being able
to pick up and understand new technology easily are something that is
VITAL in the ever-changing Home-based setup. Smartphones, SmartTVs,
centralised file storage, media sharing - all have become commonplace in
a lot of homes compared with five years ago......and who knows what
tomorrow will bring and how it will work in with what is there already?
That's where I come in.........
I
love technology and adapting it to work for the people who need it -
not the other way around. In many cases over the years, it has been my
role to integrate new and emerging technologies with the
existing ones and I have developed an innovative and adaptable quality
to my approach. Sure - I know the industry standards inside and out, but I believe there
are always more options than first apparent....and I usually find them.
I have been in the
computer industry since 1985 and I've seen a lot of things come, go, come
back again and develop from science fiction into reality. I've been
there for the rise of the PC to something that pretty much everyone now has, the rise of the Internet and all the different sites (Google, Facebook, Twitter etc) that we now take for granted and from Dial-Up and Frame Relay through to the many types of internetworking connectivity available today in both in the corporate world and at home.
I
have worked in the IT department of multinational corporate offices, in
the public and private sectors and in a large government department. I
have also worked as a Field Support Engineer and Technical Services Manager for a couple of IT
Services companies, serving many businesses of between 5 and 70 staff
across Auckland. As
I prefer the more hands-on, troubleshooting and customer-facing aspects
of the industry, I left management to go back into customer support and
have not looked back. The latter part of my career has included
contracting to various companies and institutions in this capacity.
Evenings and weekends will find me either in my gardens, out with my family, tinkering with some piece of technology or reading up on new ones.
